Wellcamp Export Hub to Reach Global Potential

Darling Downs (Queensland) producers will have easier access to airfreight for their exports with a new $10 million Regional Trade Distribution Centre to be built at Wellcamp Airport.

Darling Downs producers wanting to tap into the export market to meet booming demand for the region’s market-leading agricultural produce will have easier access with a new $10 million hub to be built at Wellcamp Airport. Originally known as “Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport,” the name was changed two years ago to Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport – IATA code: WTB.
It is 150km from Brisbane and operates a fully licensed international air cargo terminal in conjunction with Menzies Aviation.
Its 2.87km runway is approved for 747-8F freighter operations.

The Regional Trade Distribution Centre, to be built by Wagners Group Holdings, is one of two to be constructed in Queensland. The hub will add 3,500sq m to the airport, with construction set to start late next year. Despite initially planning to fund only one centre, the Queensland government said both Toowoomba and Cairns in the Far North would receive the hubs due to strong competitive bids. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new WTB facility will supercharge rapid airfreight access for agricultural producers and would ease access to international markets, while creating new jobs in the Darling Downs.

The hub will be used to process premium export goods including beef, dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables, pork and packaged nuts. It supports the ambitions of the region’s producers, including pork producers Swickers in Kingaroy, and Inglewood-based vegetable growers Qualipac.

Cathay Pacific’s weekly 747-8F service operates on a Tuesday from WTB direct to Hong Kong (HKG). This flight allows connection to Cathay Pacific’s worldwide air cargo freight distribution network.
